Our first digital ad is up! In its debut on organic social media, we got close to 5,000 views across our platforms on the first day alone! Now it is hitting cell phones, laptops, and smart TVs all over the district, and making sure we reach more voters than any candidate for this seat has ever been able to before. Check it out on Twitter and Facebook, let us know what you think, and share! Early voting has just begun, with the September 6th primary only a week from Tuesday.

The top Sunday Boston Globe Letter to the Editor calls it. Cathleen Cavell, who served for seven years on the Judicial Nominating Commission, writes, "The incumbent complains that governors nominate their cronies and their big donors, but Patrick nominated qualified, capable, and diverse lawyers -- and the incumbent voted against confirming several of them. The District 3 challenger, Mara Dolan, is a public defender who brings demonstrated commitment to racial and criminal justice to this work."

Endorsements alert for the 8 Newton City Councilors that have endorsed Mara Dolan

So, is it "Councillor" or "Councilor"? It's the classic law school answer. It depends. On your ballot, look for “Councillor”. That said, it's time to look at the eight Newton City Councilors I am so proud to have endorsed me. I am thrilled to have so much support in the great City of Newton: Vice Chair Richard Lipof, Alicia Bowman, Deborah Crossley, Andreae Downs, Becky Grossman, Andrea Kelly, and Holly Ryan. Andreae Downs says, "It's high time Newton was represented by someone who shares our values -- Mara Dolan is that person." Holly Ryan says, "Mara Dolan supported me from the beginning and is a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. She has shown over and over that she has the values and character we need on the Governor's Council. With her work for racial and social justice as a public defender, I give her my very enthusiastic endorsement." These great Counciliors agree: look on your ballot for "Councillor", and vote Mara Dolan!

Thanks to everyone who has reached out to let me know how much they appreciate the work we are doing on this campaign. When we started, some folks said no one would pay attention. How wrong they were. This campaign has been covered by The Boston Globe, Commonwealth Magazine, Politico Mass, Mass Lawyers Weekly, State House News, GBH, WWLP, Patches all over the District, the Lexington Observer, Burlington Buzz, Watertown News, Boston Red Cloaks, and many more. It’s time to stop saying no one talks about the Governor’s Council. That is so yesterday.

Today, ACLU Massachusetts is shining a light on the Governor's Council, making sure their members understand how important this office is, urging their members to Vote With Your Whole Ballot. Citizens for Juvenile Justice produced its Youth Justice Voters Guide, making sure to include the Governor’s Council, which they also highlighted at a recent forum. If you’re in or near Lexington, check out the Lexington Observer’s What Do Lexington Voters Need To Know which also includes this race for Governor’s Council.

This is a huge shift away from where we were just five months ago, when I was standing by myself in front of supermarkets, asking strangers to sign my nomination papers. I liked it when it was cold, because it gave me an excuse to wear my bright yellow puffy jacket so more people saw me. When I told folks what the Governor’s Council does, and that I was running to be the first public defender on the Council, the response was immediate and positive – practically every time. So I knew we were on to something. Today we are on the edge of making an enormous and powerful change, one that will help us make sure our judicial branch reflects the will of the people, and that our district has a representative in the Governor’s Council with our good values, and who will make sure your voice is heard.

Look at this gorgeous lawn sign pic. We’re so close, only nine days from the September 6th primary. Please DONATE today to help us reach as many voters as we can. We know it’s going very, very well. We know we have the wind at our backs. It’s time to turn this great idea, electing the first public defender to the Governor’s Council, into a reality. With your support, we will.

Take Care,

Mara
